The 4 Roles of Leadership

Tom Billings, UBA Executive Director

Have you seen the commercial where the cowboys are trying to drive a herd of cats?  A pastor quipped to me that leading people feels like herding cats!

That may be.  But I don’t believe herding and leading are the same thing.  Coercion and force—herding others—will only get you so far.  And these days, it isn’t far enough.  Leadership involves trust, teamwork, accountability, and high performance all set in an environment of whitewater change.  The 4 Role of Leadership seminar is an intensive two and one-half day workshop that helps you learn how to be a more effective leader.

The workshop is designed for a pastor and/or staff minister and staff to participate in together.  Your assignments will real work, not busywork.

The sessions will focus on the four roles of leadership:  pathfinding, aligning, empowering and modeling.

  • Pathfinding is about vision and strategy development and implementation.
  • Aligning helps you understand and create systems where people work together for maximum performance.
  • Empowering gives you the know-how to release the gifts, talent, energy and contribution of people.
  • Modeling is about building trust and being trustworthy.
