A small red brick building sits tucked away in the neighborhood at a bend in the road. The roar of planes overhead regularly announces the proximity of Hobby Airport, but the people gathered inside to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Garden Villas Baptist Church have long ago become accustomed to this and do not even turn their heads. The sun shines brightly through bullet-proof stained glass windows in the worship center, placed there, according to former pastor William Jackson, as a result of a neighborhood shooting years ago that left a bullet hole in an outside wall. . .Garden Villas is a reminder that older, smaller congregations have a significant role to play in accomplishing the purposes of God. As I worshiped with them, I was deeply moved and encourged.
